Ovulasisatu ovum berlangsung secara bergantian dari ovarium kiri atau kanan, biasanya setiap 28 hari sekali. jika ovulasi berlangsung sejak usia 14 tahun hingga 40 tahun, maka banyaknya ovum yang dihasilkan wanita sekitar 26 x 13 = 338 ovum.padahal sebenarnya, sejak lahir setiao wanita mempunyai 400.000 oosit primer. ini berartitidak semua oosit primer dapat tumbuh menjadi ovum karena mengalami kematian.
